Dominican Food

Due to Wil´s work schedule, I have a lot of time on my hands. So, I´ve decided to have a little fun and write a Dominican Food blog. How cool is that? I don´t know how long it will last, but I decided that since I live with this awesome Dominican cook, and I have hours, literally hours, to blog, I may as well do something totally frivolous with that time. And, did I mention that it is nice and cool in the internet place? Well, it is!

Since my idea came to me last night while Wil was at work, I´m going to begin with our midnight meal. Wil is crazy and doesn´t eat most of the day while he is at work, so he comes home very hungry. Then he cooks!

Last night we had left over coffee and drinking chocolate that he made a few days before, boiled yucca (pronounced jooca), and fried salami. Oh, yeah and a boiled green banana just for fun!

If you follow my best friend´s cake blog, evilcakelady.blogspot.blog, (if you don´t, you should!), then you can see that my pictures aren´t quite up to her quality. I need to learn more about my camera and photographing under only fluorescent light, ugh!!!

Here is a display of the drinking chocolate that Wil uses. He used two little packs of the chocolate for about 2 quarts of water. He added 4 whole cinnamon sticks. This is also one of the best buys here. I think it is around $1 for the whole box!

I made Wil show off the cinnamon sticks. They make it so amazing and delicious. Plus, it was better after being in the refrigerator for a few days. He said that his aunt prepares it and then drinks it the next week. Obviously the container above is not the 2 quart container he used, we had already drank a lot of the chocolate a few days ago.
The post peeling parts. Wil peeled and cleaned the yucca and the green bananas. Then he cut the yucca, but left them in fairly large chunks.
Beautiful and white when they are put in the water!
You can see the color of the yucca and banana beginning to change. When they are tender(sort of like a potato), they are done. Some of the yucca had some strings that Wil removed, some of the strings had cooked off in the water.
Yes, it´s the super special salami. We bought a two pack, this one is pork. I haven´t had the turkey yet. (sorry about the terrible flash photo)
ahhh, the smell of meat frying, sorry to the vegetarians reading this...
This is the final product!! It was really delicious! You can see that Wil always makes a presentation when he cooks, even if it is just for us! The yucca does become more yellow after it is cooked, then he added butter as well. Yucca doesn´t have a lot of flavor, but it has the starchiness that was nice with the salami. The green banana is the second from the top left. It looks browner in the photo than in person. Boiled green bananas are becoming one of my favorites. They are almost like a potato...so good! The fried salami tastes like some other food, but I can´t think of what it is...

YUM! How cool that you are learning all of this. Wilman, you are a gourmet! And I appreciate the presentation. Are the green bananas sweet? Are there many preserved foods?

aw, i'm blushing!! you so nice to your old roommate!

i think the food blog is a great idea. i am so glad you are documenting all of wilman's tasty food. and look--THE salami! i hope you bring me some of that drinking chocolate. it would be yummy after all that tobagganing. think about it.

i have no tips for you about photographing food, except try not to use the flash. that does make it hard when wilman cooks at midnight, i know. your camera might have a flourescent light setting--mine does--and that might help. i'm sure there are others reading that are more camera inclined. speak up, photographers!

oh, and for those of you who can't figure out how to leave a comment (that means you Cookie), choose to comment as OpenID. You won't need a blog or a google account if you do it that way!

love you joelf! so glad you found a nice and cool internet cafe just down the street!

Char-The green bananas are not sweet. They are just a really mild good flavor. I much prefer them to the yucca.

ECL-thanks for writing that about the comments, some folks have been having difficulty and I didn't really know what to suggest.

hey joelf, will you check your settings and make sure you've allowed comments from anybody (inlcuding anonymous). i was wrong about the openID--it requires you to plug in a web address--so maybe that's why people are having trouble. i think the automatic standard is not to allow anonymous commenters so you need to change it yourself. if you allow comments from anybody that should clear things up.

go to your dashboard, and under this blog name go to settings, and go to the tab for commenting and you'll see what to do from there.

hopefully that will be more helpful than what i originally suggested!!

also, i found that people seemed to have more trouble when i had the comment form embedded at the bottom of the post like you do here. so i changed it back to the comment form being a pop up window which seems to make it easier for those without a google account. you can change those settings in the same place where you can change to allow anonymous commenters.

uuuuh, guess I'd have to try the bananas/yucca & fried salami before I go "yucking" it cuz it doesn't sound very appealing. Does the salami taste like spam? I DO find it intriguing cuz it's so different. What else is on the menu? I'm really enjoying your blog & have no trouble commenting (probably cuz I have a google acct). What games ya playing with Auntie tonight? Love you. Hezzy
